According to laws on the protection of personal data, cookies can be divided into technical cookies, the use of which does not require the user's consent, and analytical cookies that are not comparable to technical and profiling cookies, for which the user's consent must be obtained.
Technical cookies
Technical cookies are used for the sole purpose of "transmitting a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the contracting party or user to provide such a service" (see Article 122, paragraph 1, of the Code).
This type of cookie is further subdivided into:
-
Browsing/session cookies These cookies are essential to navigate within the website using all its functions, such as session maintenance and access to restricted areas. They are strictly necessary, as without them it would not be possible to provide the services requested. These cookies do not collect information to be used for commercial purposes.
-
Analytics cookies. These collect and analyse information on the use of the website by visitors (pages visited, number of visitors, time spent on the website, etc.) to optimise site management. They are comparable to technical cookies only if:
- They are only used to produce aggregate statistics and with respect to a single website or mobile application.
- At least the fourth component of the IP address is masked.
- Third parties refrain from combining such analytics cookies with other processing (customer files or statistics of visits to other websites, for instance) or passing them on to third parties.
-
Functional cookies. These allow the user to navigate according to a set of selected criteria (e.g. language) in order to provide the user with a better browsing experience. The information collected by this type of cookie is anonymous.
The website functions optimally if technical cookies are enabled.
Profiling cookies
Profiling cookies are used to link specific actions or behavioural patterns recurring in the use of the functions offered to specific, identified or identifiable individuals in order to group the various profiles within homogeneous clusters of different sizes so that increasingly targeted advertising messages can be sent, i.e. consistent with the preferences expressed by the user when browsing the web.
Third-party cookies
When browsing the website, cookies may be installed by other sites operated by other parties (“third parties”). In this case the website’s Data Controller only acts as a technical intermediary between the user and these third parties.
